Chapter Twelve
The morning sun had barely topped the distant horizon when Tremayne drew rein in Hospital Canyon behind the post magazine. His initial reaction to the message, which he still carried in his shirt pocket two days after receiving it, lingered in his mind like a flower wilted on the vine.
Mister Tremayne. Doc Henry asked me to inform you that the crutches for your daughter will be ready in two days, as we discussed.
The date has been set.
The date has been set. Damn! Sleeping Lion Mountain might as well have fallen full-weight on top of him. That was how smothered he felt, reading those words.
But hadn’t he the same as told her to set the damned date? The fact that it was as far from what either of them wanted as these mountains were from the moon didn’t count. The truth was, it was best for Sabrina. Best for both of them.
Still, he hadn’t expected her to act so soon. Or to make it a point to tell him about it. He didn’t want to know. If it weren’t for the negotiations and what peace could mean for Keturah, he would leave and never look back.
That thought, leaving Sabrina, never again to see her, left him physically weak. Witless, like he had called her.
And hadn’t she proved that! Not only had she sent him the message, but she had it delivered in full view of Jasper.
The woman baffled and bewildered him. In that order, and reversed. Hell, any way he looked at it, Sabrina Bolton was trying her best to tree him, even though she hadn’t the slightest idea what kind of wildcat she’d set her sights on.
Two months away from her had been both curse and blessing. Every minute he had longed for her, ached for her in more ways than the mere physical. But two months’ absence had shown him the truth. Making a clean break now would serve them both.
He shouldn’t have stopped by the hospital again. He’d thought it best, more honorable, to see her one last time, to tell her good-bye in person.
But he hadn’t said good-bye.
He had said hello.
And what were her first words? She’d held Chi’s daughter. Tremayne’s arms still trembled, recalling the effort it had taken him not to grab her and hold her and kiss her.
Kiss her. He never had. Now he never would.
But he had certainly thought about it. Kissing her and a whole lot more. Visions of her holding Chi’s little girl ran amuck in his brain. The child became a baby, his baby.
Fortunately, that image broke the spell. He had come to end things with her, and he had. Or he thought he had. Then, not two hours after he left her fuming on the hospital steps, he walked out of Headquarters and into trouble.
The negotiations had gotten nowhere. Carmichael was as bullheaded as ever; Jasper ran him a close second. Negotiation was a poor term for the concessions they expected from the Apache. By noon the stalemate
